Sudden Foot Pain in Elderly: Causes and Relief
Medical information provided by Orthofeet Team / July 29, 2025Waking up with unexplained foot pain or experiencing sharp discomfort while walking can be both concerning and disruptive to your daily routine. Sudden foot pain in elderly individuals is more common than many people realize, and understanding the causes can help you find effective relief and prevent future issues. As we age, our feet undergo natural changes that can make them more susceptible to pain and injury. The good news is that most sudden foot pain episodes can be managed effectively with the right approach to care, supportive footwear like walking shoes for seniors, and simple lifestyle adjustments. Proper foot care and consulting a doctor or podiatrist regularly can keep foot problems at bay. Let's explore the most common foot problems faced as you get older and discover practical strategies to help maintain comfort and mobility. Common Causes of Sudden Foot Pain in Elderly Several factors can contribute to unexpected foot pain in older adults. Foot pain is a common complaint among seniors, affecting approximately 20 percent of older adults regularly [1]. Skin changes and toenail disorders also play a role in foot discomfort. These issues are part of the broader range of common foot problems in older adults, many of which can be managed with proper footwear and care. Understanding these causes helps you identify potential triggers and seek appropriate treatment when needed. Arthritis and Joint Issues Arthritis is one of the leading causes of sudden foot pain in elderly individuals. Both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis can affect the many joints in your feet, causing inflammation, stiffness, and sudden pain flare-ups [2]. Osteoarthritis develops when the cartilage in your joints wears down over time. This can cause bone-on-bone contact that creates sharp, sudden pain, especially when you first stand up in the morning or after sitting for extended periods [2]. The joints in your toes, midfoot, and ankle are particularly vulnerable to arthritic changes. Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition, can cause sudden inflammation in multiple joints simultaneously [2]. This type of arthritis often causes severe morning stiffness and pain that may improve with gentle movement throughout the day. Weather changes and stress can trigger sudden flare-ups that make walking difficult and uncomfortable, which is why wearing supportive walking shoes can make daily movement more manageable. Nerve Conditions and Neuropathy Peripheral neuropathy is another common cause of sudden foot pain in elderly individuals, particularly those with diabetes. This condition occurs when nerves in your feet become damaged, leading to burning, tingling, or shooting pain that can appear suddenly and intensely [3]. Older people, especially those with diabetes, may face chronic foot problems. Peripheral neuropathy affects 26% to 39.2% of those 65 years of age and older, in contrast to 2% to 8% of the general population [4]. Diabetic neuropathy often starts gradually but can cause episodes of severe pain that feel like electric shocks or burning sensations. These symptoms are typically worse at night and can significantly disrupt sleep and daily activities [3]. Other nerve-related conditions can also cause sudden foot pain. Tarsal tunnel syndrome occurs when nerves become compressed as they pass through the ankle, causing sharp pain that shoots into the foot [3]. Sciatica, while originating in the lower back, can cause referred pain that travels down the leg and into the foot, creating sudden discomfort that may be difficult to pinpoint. Infections and conditions such as gout can further complicate foot health. Injuries and Overuse Even minor activities can sometimes lead to sudden foot pain in older adults. Stress fractures, which are small cracks in the bones, can develop from repetitive activities or simply from the natural weakening of bones that occurs with age [1]. These fractures often cause sudden, sharp pain that worsens with weight-bearing activities. Plantar fasciitis is another common cause of sudden heel pain, especially in the morning. This condition occurs when the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot becomes inflamed [1]. The pain is typically most severe with the first steps of the day and can feel like a sharp stabbing sensation in the heel and foot. Tendonitis, particularly in the Achilles tendon, can cause sudden heel pain and discomfort. This condition often develops from overuse, sudden increases in activity, or wearing improper footwear that doesn't provide adequate support [1]. Why Do Feet Hurt as You Get Older? Understanding why your feet hurt as you get older helps explain why sudden pain episodes become more common with age. Foot problems like plantar fasciitis and bunions often develop with age, challenging mobility. Several natural changes occur in our feet over time that increase the likelihood of experiencing discomfort. Fat pads in the heels and balls of the feet naturally thin out as we age. By age 50, you may have lost nearly half of the fatty padding on the soles of your feet [5]. These fatty cushions normally absorb impact and provide protection for the bones and joints underneath. When they thin, every step creates more direct pressure on these sensitive areas, making sudden pain more likely. Arches may flatten over time due to weakening ligaments and tendons. This change in foot structure affects how weight is distributed across your foot and increases the risk of strain in areas that weren't previously stressed [5]. Flat feet can also contribute to overpronation, increasing the risk and placing additional stress on muscles and joints. Reduced circulation is common in older adults and affects how quickly your feet heal from minor injuries or inflammation. Poor circulation also means that swelling and inflammation may persist longer, contributing to ongoing discomfort. Muscles and ligaments naturally lose strength and flexibility with age. This weakness makes your feet more vulnerable to stress and strain from normal activities [5]. What your feet could easily handle in your younger years may now cause discomfort or sudden pain problems. Slower healing processes mean that minor injuries or inflammation take longer to resolve. This can lead to chronic issues that periodically flare up, causing episodes of sudden pain. How Footwear Can Help Alleviate Foot Pain Choosing the right shoes plays a crucial role in preventing and relieving sudden foot pain in older people. Proper footwear addresses many of the underlying factors that contribute to foot discomfort and can significantly reduce the frequency and severity of pain episodes. Supportive shoes reduce strain on joints and muscles by providing stability and proper alignment. When your feet are properly supported, the stress on individual joints and muscles is distributed more evenly, reducing the likelihood of sudden pain from overuse or strain. Arch support helps distribute weight evenly across your foot and prevents excessive pressure on specific areas. This support is particularly important for people with fallen arches or flat feet, as it helps maintain proper foot mechanics and reduces strain on the plantar fascia and other structures. Shoes designed specifically for foot health, such as orthopedic shoes for men and orthopedic shoes for women, often offer superior arch support, which helps distribute weight evenly across your foot and prevents excessive pressure on specific areas. Cushioning softens impact and protects pressure points that are vulnerable to sudden pain. Quality cushioning in the heel and forefoot areas helps compensate for the natural thinning of fat pads that occurs with age, providing the protection your feet need. Choosing the right shoes for seniors with balance and joint support can make a significant difference in daily comfort. Wide toe boxes prevent compression of your toes and reduce pain from conditions like bunions, hammertoes, or arthritis in the toe joints. When your toes have adequate space, they can function naturally without the restriction that leads to pain and deformity. Adjustable features help accommodate swelling or changing foot shape that may occur throughout the day. This adjustability ensures that your shoes remain comfortable and supportive even when your feet swell or when conditions like arthritis or diabetes causes stiffness that changes how your feet feel in your shoes. For those experiencing swelling or edema, specialized shoes for swollen and edema feet, including men’s shoes for swollen feet and women’s shoes for swollen feet, provide extra room and comfort without compromising support. When to Seek Medical Attention for Foot Pain While many episodes of sudden foot pain can be managed at home, certain symptoms require prompt medical evaluation. Consult a podiatrist if you have ongoing foot issues requiring expert insights. Knowing when to seek professional help can prevent complications and ensure you receive appropriate treatment. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience sudden, severe pain that appears without any apparent cause, especially if it's accompanied by swelling, redness, or warmth. These symptoms could indicate a serious condition such as infection, gout, or a blood clot. Persistent numbness or tingling that doesn't improve with rest or changing positions may indicate nerve damage that requires medical evaluation [3]. This is particularly important for people with diabetes, as untreated neuropathy can lead to serious complications. Inability to bear weight or walk comfortably should always be evaluated by a healthcare provider. This level of pain may indicate a fracture, severe sprain, or other injury that requires professional treatment. A podiatrist can diagnose and treat the underlying problems, possibly preventing surgery. Any visible injury with bruising, deformity, or an open wound needs medical attention. Even seemingly minor injuries can become serious in older adults, especially those with diabetes or circulation problems. Pain that interferes with sleep or daily activities consistently should be evaluated, as this level of discomfort often indicates an underlying condition that can be effectively treated with proper medical care. Don't Ignore Sudden Foot Pain Sudden foot pain in elderly individuals is a common experience that can have many different causes. From arthritis flare-ups to nerve pain to overuse injuries, understanding why feet hurt as you get older helps you take appropriate action to find relief. The right footwear makes a significant difference in both preventing and managing sudden foot pain episodes. Shoes designed specifically for aging feet provide the support, cushioning, and comfort features that address the underlying factors contributing to pain. Orthofeet shoes are specially engineered to support aging feet and provide relief from the conditions that commonly cause sudden pain in older adults. With proper foot care, appropriate footwear, and attention to warning signs that require medical attention, you can maintain your mobility and comfort as you age. Can Stress Cause Burning Feet? Understanding the Connection
Medical information provided by Alea Becwar / February 18, 2025Ever felt like your feet were on fire, especially when life's getting a little too hectic? It's not just your imagination. Many people experience a strange burning sensation in their feet during times of stress or anxiety. But is there a real link between these two seemingly unrelated things and can stress cause burning feet? Let's explore the science behind this connection between mental stress and foot and ankle pain and what might be causing hot feet. What causes burning feet? Burning feet syndrome, or Grierson-Gopalan syndrome, is a condition where the feet become unusually hot and painful. If you're dealing with burning feet, it’s important to first understand the possible physical underlying cause. Here are some of the most common causes: Diabetic neuropathy Over time, high blood sugar damages nerves, especially in the feet, leading to symptoms such as a burning sensation, numbness, tingling, and sharp foot-ankle pain. Although stress doesn’t directly cause neuropathy, it can: Worsen nerve damage in people with diabetic or peripheral neuropathy Increased blood sugar levels, potentially accelerating nerve damage Lead to unhealthy habits (smoking, alcohol, poor diet) that damage nerves even further Alcohol use Excessive alcohol use can damage nerves, causing burning pain and weakness in the feet. Nutritional deficiencies Lack of essential vitamins, particularly B vitamins, can lead to nerve damage and burning feet. Small fiber neuropathy Damage to small nerve fibers can cause painful burning sensations in the feet. Athlete’s foot This fungal infection can cause symptoms like itching, burning, and peeling skin on the feet. Hypothyroidism An underactive thyroid can lead to peripheral neuropathy, contributing to burning feet. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) Narrowing of the arteries can reduce blood flow to the legs and feet, resulting in pain and burning sensations. Managing the underlying condition, such as controlling blood sugar in diabetes, can significantly reduce symptoms and prevent further complications. The link between stress and burning feet The short answer to the ‘Can stress cause burning feet?’ question is yes. Stress plays a surprisingly significant role in various bodily functions, including how our feet feel. Understanding the link between stress or anxiety and foot discomfort can help you manage symptoms more effectively. How stress affects the body Stress is a natural part of life and it affects the body in various ways. When we’re stressed, the body releases stress hormones like cortisol and this activates the ‘fight or flight’ response. This response redirects blood flow away from the legs, feet and ankles to vital organs like the heart and brain. This redirection means that the feet may not receive enough oxygen and nutrients, leading to symptoms like burning, tingling, or numbness. Stress also causes muscle pain and high tension throughout the body, including in the feet and ankles, which can lead to stiffness, chronic pain, and weakness. When muscle tension persists, it increases the risk of injuries such as plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis. These conditions involve inflammation of tendons in the feet, which can cause pain and discomfort. Finally, when considering the question 'Can anxiety cause foot pain?', it's important to note that stress and anxiety can affect posture, leading to improper weight distribution on the feet and raising the risk of pain and injury, such as stress fracture. Stress-related symptoms in the feet But how exactly can stress cause burning feet? Although stress doesn’t directly cause burning feet, it can exacerbate existing conditions by affecting circulation and nerve function. Common stress-related symptoms in the feet include: Burning sensations: Reduced blood flow caused by stress can deprive the feet of nutrients and oxygen, leading to a burning feeling. Cold feet: As blood circulation is redirected to other parts of the body, stress can make your feet feel unusually cold. Numbness or tingling: Stress can also interfere with nerve signals in the feet, causing tingling or numbness. Increased risk of injury: Stress-induced muscle tension and poor posture can lead to conditions like plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis, making the feet more prone to injury. Managing stress to alleviate foot symptoms If you’re wondering, 'Can stress cause burning feet?' it could be a sign that stress is starting to affect your daily life. But don’t worry, there are plenty of techniques and changes you can make to help both you and your feet feel less pressured. Here are some tips to help you get there. Stress reduction techniques Body awarenessClose your eyes and focus on the areas where you feel tension in your body. Take deep breaths and allow those areas to relax and release the tension. Breathing exercisesBreathing is one of the most effective methods for stress management. Focus on your breathing, taking slow, deep breaths to calm both your mind and body. Visual relaxationUse your imagination and visualize peaceful and calming experiences or moments to help you relax. You can also use guiding sources, such as apps or recordings if you find it easier. Imagine peaceful, calming moments to help you unwind. You can also use guided tools like apps or recordings if they make visualization easier. Meditation Concentrate on your breathing to bring your focus to the present moment, letting go of thoughts about the past or future. This can help reduce stress, anxiety and improve emotional well-being [5]. Ancient artsYoga, tai chi, qigong and other similar practices combine controlled breathing with movement to help you relax physically and mentally. If you experience health problems or are not used to physical activity, consult your doctor beforehand.Practices like yoga, tai chi, and qigong combine controlled breathing with movement to relax you both physically and mentally. If you have health concerns or aren't used to physical activity, check with your doctor before starting. Lifestyle changes for better foot health Stretch and strengthenGently stretch your toes, arches, and Achilles tendon to keep them flexible and ease pain. In addition, strengthening foot muscles with physical therapy exercises like toe curls or rolling a tennis ball under your foot can help prevent further issues and relieve even severe pain. IcingApplying ice to painful areas of your feet can help reduce swelling and discomfort. Ice the area for 15-20 minutes at a time. Healthy weightExtra weight means extra strain on your feet. Maintaining a healthy weight can help reduce foot pain. Physical activityLow-impact exercises that don’t put strain on your feet, like cycling and swimming, can keep you active and healthy without aggravating foot pain. Foot hygieneKeep your feet clean and dry to prevent infections and irritation. And don’t forget to moisturize. Recommended footwear for reducing foot discomfort The shoes you wear can make a big difference in your foot pain or discomfort, so it’s important to choose ones that provide support, cushioning, stability, and comfort. For those with conditions like neuropathy or diabetes, wearing properly fitted shoes for neuropathy or diabetic shoes can help protect sensitive feet, improve circulation, and reduce the risk of sores or injuries. Here are the features to look for in orthopedic shoes that’ll keep your feet supported and lessen painful symptoms throughout the day. Cushioned solesLightweight soles with multiple layers of impact absorbing materials and a mild rocker bottom do two things: they significantly reduce the strain on your feet to ease pain, and they promote smoother, easier motion, minimizing muscle fatigue. Orthotic insolesOrthotic insoles or inserts are designed with arch support to prevent overpronation (when your foot rolls inward, causing pain and discomfort) and to help correct your gait and the alignment of your feet with your body."Orthotic insoles help transfer a substantial portion of body weight to the arch, reducing pressure on the heel and ball of the foot," says Dr. Steven Gershman, DPM. Distributing weight more evenly across your foot not only helps minimize forefoot or heel pain but also reduces impact all the way up to your knees, hips, and back. Wide toe boxDr. Gershman explains that a wide toe box shoes gives your toes more room to move freely, “helping to prevent painful foot issues like bunions or hammertoe deformities.” Extra space at the forefoot also helps prevent cramping and the pain it causes. Variety of widthsEnsuring your shoes fit comfortably and properly is key to preventing foot pain, and that’s why it’s best to choose shoes that come in a wider variety of widths. “Unlike standard shoes, orthopedic shoes come in various widths to accommodate different foot shapes and sizes,” says Dr. Gershman. Extra depthIf you’re using custom shoe orthotics, your shoes need to accommodate them without squeezing your feet. Shoes with extra depth provide the space you need and also help minimize pressure points that can lead to pain or irritation. Stretch uppersStretchable upper materials adapt to the unique shape of your feet, preventing pressure and allowing your feet to swell throughout the day. "The stretch adjusts, giving you the feeling of a perfect fit at any time of day," comments Dr. Gershman. Protective interiorSmooth, soft interiors help prevent irritation, rubbing, and pressure points, which is especially important if you have sensitive feet or conditions like diabetes or neuropathy. Our shoes are engineered with features like cushioned soles, orthotic insoles, and a wide toe box to alleviate discomfort and support active lifestyles. 10 Best Shoes for Charcot Foot
Medical information provided by Steven Gershman DPM / February 06, 2024Finding the right shoes for your Charcot foot can be tricky, but we’re here to tell you that it doesn't have to be stressful. This guide is your simple resource, offering medical tips and insights to help you choose shoes that are both comfortable and supportive. No need for fancy terms or complicated explanations. We'll keep things straight-forward, focusing on practicality and finding the perfect fit for your unique needs. So, put your feet up, grab a cuppa, and let's navigate the world of Charcot foot (not to be confused with Charcot Marie Tooth) shoes together. To lay the correct groundwork, we asked podiatrist Dr. Steven Gershman to explain about the condition. “Diabetic Charcot foot is a progressive neuropathic arthropathy - a degeneration of the joints and bones in the foot. Joint dislocation and collapse mainly in the midfoot can occur. It can be very disfiguring along with creating an unstable foot prone to open wounds or ulcerations on the bottom of the foot,” says Dr. Geshman. “Charcot foot is caused by nerve damage from diabetes, leading to loss of sensation, which causes overuse of joints and eventual breakdown or dislocation, or both. In addition, there is an increase in blood flow to the bones from the nerve damage, which washes out and weakens the foot bones,” he explains. Dr Gershman adds that “Initially, the patient presents with a swollen warm foot that is not infected. Untreated, it will progress to the breakdown of the joints and dislocation and permanent deformity of the foot. Initial treatment is complete immobilization of the foot, ankle or lower leg in a cast or solid boot. In addition, the patient should be non-weight bearing until the foot cools down and stabilizes. This can take months in severe cases,” he says. What type of footwear is best for Charcot foot? “After the cast or boot is removed, the person can return to shoes, sometimes with a brace if deformity has damaged the foot structure. Shoes should be appropriate to the level of damage (if any) that Charcot has caused,” clarifies Dr. Geshman. He goes on to specify that “If the foot is structurally sound and intact, then a well made supportive shoe is worn. A quality insert to support the foot is important also. The insert may need to be custom molded if there is a risk of ulceration due to bony protrusions.” “The shoe should be designed with extra depth and a round, wide toe box to avoid pressure on the toes,” says Dr. Geshman. “As there is a lack of sensation, the shoe should avoid rubbing on any part of the foot so the inside should be soft and seamless. The leather should be soft but also strong. A rocker outsole can be helpful. Opt for shoes that are made to match these qualities as they are highly recommended for diabetic neuropathy.” Dr. Gershman also notes, “If a brace such as an AFO (ankle-foot-orthosis) is required, the shoe should be extra wide and deep, and in some cases needs to be stretchable.” “If the foot has developed significant deformity from Charcot, then a true custom molded shoe will be required,” he concludes. Now that we understand more about the importance of finding the right shoes, it’s time to list our top Charcot foot footwear. What are the best shoes for Charcot foot? We’ve worked hard to put together the following list of supportive shoes, all of which have a few common design features that are recommended for those dealing with Charcot foot: A premium orthotic insert with anatomical arch support that corrects the gait and realigns the foot with the entire body posture. An extra depth design to prevent pressure on the foot and toes. A round and wide toe box that doesn’t cramp the toes and allows them to spread naturally. A seam-free and fully padded interior that’s soft on the skin and prevents any rubbing. Non-binding upper materials that are also strong, to provide support without applying pressure on the feet. A mild rocker bottom design that makes walking easier by propelling the foot forward. A scooter that allows the affected leg to completely rest can be helpful.” He goes on to explain, “After the initial period, shoes and inserts that accommodate any deformity that has occurred are critical. Avoiding ulcers is the goal as once a wound or ulcer opens up, it can take months to heal and sometimes leads to amputation.” Does Charcot foot get worse? According to Dr. Gershman, it can. “If proper initial treatment is not followed and permanent deformity occurs, the foot is at high risk of ulcers. Ulcers are very difficult to heal in these cases as the underlying deformity, such as protruding bone on the bottom of the foot, is a constant factor. Also, diabetics don't heal well due to the disease itself. Infection is a constant risk as diabetics are very prone to infection,” he adds. “Charcot foot is a very serious condition, but can be managed if treated early and aggressively. The patient has to stick with the often difficult treatment plan. However, the end result of proper treatment is a fully functioning foot. If not, the condition will worsen and can lead to amputation,” summarizes Dr. Gershman.Read More
